indieconf 2011 is open for registration!
“But… what is indieconf?” you may find yourself asking. Good question.
indieconf is the premier conference for independent web professionals – designers, developers, part time, full time and everyone in between. Are you working on your own as a PHP hacker, CSS guru, JavaScript deity, Rails goddess or Photoshop geek? indieconf is for you. But… we’re not really a web conference so much as a conference for people who *use* web technology, when working for themselves. Let me explain.
My name is Michael Kimsal, and I’ve been working as a freelancer for several years. Even before that, I often took on side projects for people – I love web stuff, plain and simple. I also love tech conferences. However, most tech conferences were heavy on tech, but light on issues that I was facing on a daily basis. I was dealing with clients and collections far more than CSS and catch-blocks. As a result, while I loved the networking I was getting out of tech conferences, very little of what I learned there was actionable when I got home.
I decided to put on a conference where the focus was on topics I needed to know more about: project management, marketing, contracts, legal issues, financial/tax topics, budgeting and more. *I* needed these things, and from what I could tell based on talking to colleagues, others did too. But would they come? I found out last year, when we had over 100 attendees from all over the region get together in Raleigh, NC for a day of learning from and networking with fellow independents. It worked.
This year, we’re looking to make things even better, and will be announcing our first round of speakers and sessions shortly.
